This inability to know the “other” and the inability of the “other” to know me is fascinating to me. As a visual artist I am able to use the construct of the barrier to involve my audience in the attempt to define and know the self and the other. The barrier acts as arbitrator between my audience and me. Therefore when presented with such a barrier (visual, mental or physical) the viewer consequentially becomes involved in the power struggle. As a creator I have the ability to create situations, in which I am able to know and use the structure of the barrier, as a source of power, to learn about the “I” of “me” and the “other” which is you.
